frisbie was the chief of the joint feasibility study group for the infamous son tay raid while in vietnam, and wrote of the raid and his involvement: http://docplayer.net/145283334-Son-tay-raid-by-colonel-norman-h-frisbie.html

the son tay raid, officially known as operation kingpin, was an attempt to rescue 61 pow's from a north vietnamese prison on nov. 21, 1970. while the prisoners had been moved before the raid could be carried out, it has since stood as a stellar example of planning and coordination, and future covert missions have used it as example.

frisbie was appointed by gen. jim allen to complete a feasibility report for the raid. his account of this process is available online and at the air force historical research agency at maxwell afb. this plan, detailing using hh-53 helicopters and 50 green berets for the operation was presented by allen & frisbie to army brig. general blackburn, who appointed frisbie as chief of the joint feasibility study group. they then presented their joint plan to secretary of defense melvin laird, who approved the mission. frisbie was then involved with the team selection, surveillance, modeling of the prison, training, flew a practice mission in the c-130, and later helped to oversee the mission through it's completion.
